NihontoWatchNihontoWatch本作は、菊花形の鉄地に桜花を地透とし、その間に細い糸透で霞を表した肥後鐔。桜花は写実的な姿ではなく、五弁の花弁を細長く伸ばし、その先を蕨手状に巻き込ませた文様的な表現となっている。このように桜を大胆に意匠化して透かす手法は、林又七に代表される肥後の霞桜透にみられ、鐔面を巡る桜花と、細い霞の透かしが呼応し、霞の中に桜が見え隠れする春景を表す。菊花形の輪郭と地透が調和した肥後らしい雅趣を備えた鐔。鉄味と作風から江戸時代中期頃であろう。肥後と極められて平成十三年(2001)保存刀装具審査合格。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
