This is a tanto by Hayasaka Nobumasa, a modern swordsmith born in 1958, who studied under Hōkke Saburō Nobufusa. Dated August 2002, it features a graceful form reminiscent of older works with a well-forged jigane and a bright, nioi-deki suguha hamon. The blade is in excellent condition with no forging flaws, making it a healthy and recommended piece for appreciation. It comes with a koshirae featuring a saya made of sharkskin and a shirasaya.

The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
