The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This is a modern katana made by So Kaneyoshi, son of Mukansa swordsmith So Tsutomu, and known for the Heisei-era O-wazamono "Sasatsuyu." Commissioned for iaido, it is an unused, essentially new piece with a tightly packed itame-hada and a flamboyant chōji hamon. Despite its long blade, it is lightweight and well-balanced, making it ideal for iaido practice, and comes with a newly made koshirae and shirasaya.
