His real name was Yamaguchi Takeshi. In 1952, he succeeded to his father's family forge, where he produced kitchen knives, scissors, and woodworking planes. In 1966, he became a student of Sumitani Masamine, a Living National Treasure. He established his own forge in 1972 in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. At the Shinsaku Meito Exhibition, he received numerous prestigious awards, including the Prince Takamatsu Prize and the Kunzan Prize. In 1986, he attained the distinguished status of Mukansa swordsmith. In 1993, he was designated as a holder of an Important Cultural Property of Iwate Prefecture. Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
