The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
Weight: 997g (excluding saya) It has arrived! A katana by the swordsmith Sesshu-ju Narinori, who crafted this utsushi of Sanjo Munechika, famously known even in Touken Ranbu. The smith Narinori’s real name is Mr. Tokio Udaka. Born in the 2nd year of Showa, he forged swords in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, and the famous high-end residential area of Ashiya City. He was a teacher of the highest rank, awarded Iaido Hanshi 8th Dan by the All Japan Kendo Federation and Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu Hanshi 9th Dan; he is a teacher to whom our company has been deeply indebted for a long time. This katana is an utsushi of the famous Sanjo Munechika of Kyo-Yamashiro, displaying a graceful sugata with a noticeable difference between the motohaba and sakihaba, tapering toward the point. The jigane is forged in ko-itame hada, exhibiting many chikei in the ji. The hamon is finished in nioi-deki with ko-nie, a classic go-no-me midare-ba with many kinsuji appearing within the ha, elegantly tempered to successfully capture the essence of the Sanjo Munechika famous in Touken Ranbu. The modern koshirae further adds a touch of brilliance to this masterpiece utsushi of Sanjo Munechika. We received this sword from an elderly Iaido teacher who originally had it custom-made as a commemorative piece. He entrusted it to us, saying, "I have grown old, so please pass this on to someone who will cherish it." Because of this, we are offering this masterpiece—which remains in the same condition as when it was newly made—at a special discount price. Please enjoy this masterpiece utsushi of Sanjo Munechika.
