The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
Based on the ura-mei date of Showa 64 (1989) and the style of the mei, since the 8th generation Hokke Saburo Nobufusa (real name Takahashi Noboru, 80 years old at the time, died at 91) was still alive, this work is considered to be a daisaku-daimei by his son Hokke Saburo Shinji (real name Takahashi Taiki), who would later become the 9th generation, for his father, the 8th generation Hokke Saburo Nobufusa. The 9th generation Hokke Saburo Nobufusa (Takahashi Taiki) was born in Showa 14 (1939). From the age of 18 (1957), he studied sword making and refined his skills under his father, the Mukansa tosho 8th generation Hokke Saburo Nobufusa. He received sword-making approval in Showa 59 (1974), and in Heisei 12 (2000) after the death of his father the 8th generation, he succeeded to the 9th generation of the professional name "Hokke Saburo Nobufusa" which has continued since the Edo period. This work is a magnificent wakizashi by the daisaku creator, the 9th generation Hokke Saburo at age 50 (at the time the 8th generation Hokke Saburo Nobufusa was 80 years old). It is a work that bears the unique Hokke Saburo Nobufusa mei and superbly demonstrates the Yamato-den Hosho school style he inherited.

We could not find an authenticity certificate on the seller’s listing. Japanese swords and fittings are normally papered by the NBTHK (or the NTHK). Without one, the attribution is the seller’s own assessment and has not been independently verified — treat it with caution and ask the dealer about certification before buying.
