Description

(Popular in Touken Ranbu as Kashu Kiyomitsu) (The beloved sword of Okita Soji) Weight (toshin only): 498g It has arrived—the famous Chobei Kiyomitsu, who crafted swords at the "Otasuke-goya" in Kasamai of the Kaga Domain. He is known as "Junigatsu Kiyomitsu" because he carved the upper portion of the character "Kiyo" (清) as "Twelve" (十二). This Kiyomitsu is nationally famous as a representative tosho of the Kaga Domain from around the Enpo era of the Edo period (1673, 353 years ago). The sugata of this wakizashi shows a thick motokasane with a distinct difference between the motohaba and sakihaba, presenting a powerful, curved wakizashi form. As you can see, the jigane is difficult to observe clearly due to a lack of maintenance over many years, but it appears to be forged in a bright and strong ko-itame hada. The hamon is also difficult to see clearly, but it is a nioi-deki with ko-nie, featuring gunome-ba with rounded heads, kataochi-gunome with flat heads, and togari-gunome with pointed heads. Within the ya-ba, kinsuji and sunagashi are interspersed, creating a spirited edge. Since ancient times, his work has held a high reputation for sharpness as a wazamono. This is a wakizashi by Kashu Kiyomitsu, famously known as the beloved sword of Shinsengumi First Unit Captain Okita Soji. The luxurious nijū-habaki—with a silver base on the bottom and a silver base covered in gold plate on the top—is enough on its own to demonstrate the fine provenance of this Kashu Kiyomitsu wakizashi. This Kashu Kiyomitsu has been passed down through generations of an old family, but as they were unable to maintain it, they felt regretful and requested that we pass this Kashu Chobei Kiyomitsu wakizashi on to someone who will cherish it in the future at an affordable price. Therefore, we are offering it at a special, ultra-low price. Recommended for those searching for a wakizashi by Kashu Kiyomitsu, whose popularity is currently at its peak due to Touken Ranbu as the sword of Okita Soji. Please enjoy this piece.

Historical context

The Edo period (1615 to 1868)

›

For two and a half centuries of peace the sword was the warrior’s legal badge rather than his weapon. Each great city developed its own manner, Edo’s tested strength against Ōsaka’s polished brilliance, until demand thinned in the era’s last decades.
