This antique Japanese wakizashi is signed by Minamoto Nobuyoshi, a smith of the Kyoto Mishina school active during the early to mid-Edo period in Yamashiro province. The blade comes with an NBTHK Kicho certificate, while its accompanying koshirae has an NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Tosogu certificate. The smith is a late-generation Nobuyoshi, whose lineage was known for their superb craftsmanship and some were even licensed to use the imperial chrysanthemum emblem.

The Edo period (1615 to 1868)
For two and a half centuries of peace the sword was the warrior’s legal badge rather than his weapon. Each great city developed its own manner, Edo’s tested strength against Ōsaka’s polished brilliance, until demand thinned in the era’s last decades.
This work carries older NBTHK “Kichō”-era papers, which the NBTHK no longer issues and now regards as unreliable. To confirm the attribution, submission to an official Japanese examination body (such as the NBTHK or NTHK) for modern certification could be considered.
