Description

This is a tsuba (sword guard) made by Nakahara Yukihisa of Choshu province during the mid Edo period. The tsuba features a design of waves and shells, carved in high relief with iroe (colored metal) accents on a shakudo (copper and gold alloy) ground. The piece is housed in a special made kiri (paulownia) box.
