Description

Fuchi kashira with a cherry blossom motif by Nishigaki, Higo province, mid Edo period. The bright brass ground has a fine stone texture finish due to corrosion. The cherry blossoms are carved in two types: those with the entire surface carved in low relief and those with only the outlines carved in low relief. The soft impression is created by the burnt finish. The unique powerful modeling and the faint, ephemeral cherry blossoms create a good contrast.
