NihontoWatchNihontoWatch芦原といえば武蔵野。平安時代、実際にそこを旅した『更級日記』の作者は、「芦、荻のみ高く生ひて、馬に乗りて、弓持ちたる末見えぬまで、高く生ひ茂りて」と芦や荻の草丈を、馬に乗った衛士の持つ弓の先端が見えぬほどだと表現している。赤坂鐔には珍しい、縦長に伸びやかなお多福木瓜形が芦の丈をより高く感じさせる。図柄に溶け込んだ小柄笄櫃は、小柄に比して笄櫃が極端に小さい。切羽台は先端がやや尖り気味。耳に比較して切羽台が薄くなる中低となっている。尾張鐔の造り込みを踏襲しつつ、意匠、形態に新味を加えた過渡期の作であろうか。耳にも、透にも鐔全体に合わせ鍛えの跡が顕著な本作。一部は鍛着面に亀裂が生じ、より一層枯淡の風情を醸し出している。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
