This katana is signed by Iga no Kami Minamoto Kanemichi, a highly skilled smith active in the early Edo period (around Kanbun era) in Settsu province. He was originally named Kanemasa and took over as the 2nd generation Kanemichi after his father's death. Kanemichi was a prominent smith who moved from Yamato to Osaka, working alongside his father's disciples.

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
