The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This is an excellent tachi by Oono Yoshimitsu, a master of modern sword making. It is a powerful sword in the style of a Kamakura period tachi, with a wide body and deep koshi-zori, replicating the Bizen Ichimonji style. The jigane is a beautiful koitame and mokume, and the hamon is a vibrant jyuka-choji-midare with konie, reminiscent of old Bizen works.
