The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This is an ambitious work by the highly popular swordsmith Ohno Yoshimitsu, known for his Choji Midare-ba in the style of Yamatorige. Made in June 1981, it represents his early efforts to pursue originality by emulating old works. Yoshimitsu, born in 1948 in Niigata, trained under Yoshihara Yoshindo while at Nihon University and established his own forge in Niigata in 1976.
