It has arrived, it has arrived—a masterpiece by Sagami no Kami Minamoto Norihiro has arrived. The swordsmith Norihiro was originally from Kishu Ishido, named Niwa Den'emon, and later moved to Osaka. He received the title of Sagami no Kami on August 19th, the 12th year of Kanbun (1672) during the early Edo period (354 years ago). As Osaka Shinto blades almost never feature a soemei (supplementary inscription) regarding Nanbantetsu, the fact that this blade bears a soemei stating it was purposefully made with expensive Nanbantetsu suggests it was a special custom order from a high-ranking official of the Shogunate. Regarding the sugata of this blade, it was originally a 2 shaku 3 sun 5 bu katana that a later samurai shortened to match his own swordsmanship style for use as a sashiryo. It displays an elegant and fine sugata with a distinct difference between the motohaba and sakihaba and a graceful sori. The jigane is forged from Nanbantetsu, exhibiting itame-hada with mokume-hada, creating a bright and powerful jitetsu. The hamon is in nioi-deki with konie, featuring a gunome-midare pattern with kinsuji and sunagashi (nie-suji) appearing within the ha, resulting in a spirited and well-crafted blade. The koshirae is also from the Edo period, featuring a tsuba with a dragon design by Echizen Kinai and matching dragon kanagu; this luxurious koshirae adds further splendor to Norihiro’s blade. We received this from an old connoisseur who enjoyed it for many years, but due to a slight lack of recent maintenance, they requested we pass this masterpiece by Sagami no Kami Minamoto Norihiro—forged from what was then precious Nanbantetsu—to someone who will cherish it at an affordable price. Therefore, we are offering this masterpiece from over 350 years ago at a special bargain price. Please enjoy it.
