NihontoWatchNihontoWatch来國行の孫延壽國村の流れを汲む(注1)石貫景介(いしぬき かげすけ)は、肥後菊池氏が領する玉名荘石貫を拠点とした文明頃(注2)の刀工。南朝方として武勲を立てた菊池氏は、南北朝合一後も勢力を保って肥後国守護となり、明や朝鮮と交易し財を築いた。景介が仕えた菊池重朝は応仁の乱で東軍に属し、居城隈府城で連歌の会を催すなど、国内随一の武威と教養を誇ったという。 この平造脇差は、寸法を控えめにわずかに反りの付いた室町初期を想わせる姿。板目鍛えの地鉄は地景が密に入って活力に満ち、厚く付いた地沸が光を強く反射し、白く力強く映りが立って遠祖山城国来一門の沸映りを想わせ、刃寄りは深く澄み、地斑状の肌を交えてねっとりと柔らか味があり、地相は濃淡変化に富んだ九州物の特色が顕著。刃文は直刃の処々が大きく喰い違い、刃境に湯走り、刃中に沸筋流れて二重刃風となり、細かな金線、砂流しが盛んに掛かり、刃縁に密集した沸の粒子が明るく、沸匂充満して照度高く、奔放で力強い変化は来國光、國次を髣髴とさせる。帽子はよく沸付き、表は沸筋、裏は湯走りが働き、二重刃となって小丸に浅く返る。茎は保存状態が優れ、銘字が堂々とした鑚使いで刻されている。一部に鍛え割れがあるが、現存稀有(注3)の石貫景介の実力が示された、出来優れた一振である。 注1...本間薫山博士は、『日本古刀史』で「応永・延徳頃の年紀ある作刀を稀に見る」「末延寿派と認められるものである」と述べている。 注2...藤代義雄『日本刀工辞典古刀篇』に文明八丙申二月日紀の肥州玉名住石貫景介作の脇差が載せられている。 注3...景介の他、応永二十三年八月日紀の短刀(第六十二回重要刀剣)のある石抜是吉、文明、延徳、明応年紀のある石貫昌國らがいるが、石貫鍛冶の遺作は極めて少ない。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
