Description

Weight (excluding saya): 1136g It has arrived—a sword by the legendary and currently incredibly famous and popular phantom swordsmith, Endo Mitsuoki, who is renowned for crafting the swords gifted by Admiral of the Combined Fleet, Yamamoto Isoroku, to his acquaintances. Should a sword or tanto made by Endo Mitsuoki bearing the mei of Yamamoto Isoroku appear today, it would easily command a price of over ten million yen. Endo Mitsuoki was a genius-type swordsmith who mastered the art of the sword through self-study without apprenticing under any specific master. At the time, his standing was considered superior to even the Living National Treasures Gassan Sadaichi, Miyairi Akihira, and Amada Akitsugu. His real name was Endo Nisaku. Born in Meiji 37, residing in Nuttari, Niigata City. In Showa 14, he was chosen for the prestigious honor of crafting a dedicated sword for the 700th Anniversary Festival of Emperor Go-Toba; he also crafted goshinbo-tachi for the Ise Grand Shrine and was a master smith who won numerous special prizes at New Masterpiece Sword Exhibitions. When I first viewed this sword, before I knew of Endo Mitsuoki’s history, I felt a thrill run down my spine for reasons I could not then explain. Once I learned of his background—that he was a master smith who shared a heartwarming friendship with Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku while crafting swords, and that he achieved numerous honors through self-study—I truly understood the excellence of this blade. This sword exhibits a goso (grand/magnificent) sugata with a wide motohaba and a distinct difference in width compared to the sakihaba. The jigane is a brightly forged itame-hada. The hamon is a bright nioi-deki gunome-choji with many ashi within the ha, resulting in a highly dignified blade. We received this sword from an old family who stated, "This sword was made out of respect for His Excellency Yamamoto Isoroku, but as we have grown old, please pass it on to someone who will cherish it." Because of this, we are offering it at a special, low price. Please enjoy this sword by Endo Mitsuoki, the smith who crafted the blades Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku gifted to his associates.
