Tsuchiya Yasuchika is widely known for his unique design and stylized expression of flocking chidori. It is thought that his pursuit of aesthetic beauty influenced many later kinko, and this Kishu kinko Ueda Masayoshi also sought an original chidori design, resulting in this rare expression. Using a combination of different qualities of iron with furakashi techniques and an uchikaeshi mimi, the appearance of waves rolling in and out is brought to the surface across the entire piece, while the forms of chidori flying between the waves are rendered in rounded takabori with kin zogan applied only to the eyes. The jitegane, which has a clear ring to it, is dark in color with a viscous luster, and the sinewy kitae-hada appears around the mimi as well, remaining particularly beautiful without any splitting. Masayoshi was a master smith who studied under Goto Tsunemasa before becoming independent and serving the Kishu Tokugawa family.
