This wakizashi is attributed to Chigusa Arikoto, a court noble who became Shosanmi (Junior Third Rank) in Tenpo 3 (1832). Arikoto was a passionate individual who excelled in various arts like waka poetry, calligraphy, painting, and tea ceremony, and also studied sword forging under Nankai Taro Choson. The blade features an elegant inscription of a waka poem.

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
