This tsuba features an openwork design depicting three flying geese soaring above flowing water. The geese are boldly arranged, with their wings and tail feathers skillfully connected, while gently undulating water is rendered below, creating a expansive waterside scene on a single tsuba. Bamen Tsunemasa (born 1741) came from a family in Echizen province that produced ironware such as horse fittings and armor. He was a student of Kikuchi Tsunekatsu (founder of the Kikuchi school) and was granted the character "Tsune" (序) for his name. He was a master of openwork tsuba, excelling in bold iron plate openwork and intricate designs that resembled shadow puppets. He resided in Shitaya, Edo, and this piece is characteristic of his elegant and refined style.
