Description

It has arrived, it has arrived—a magnificent and grand *wakizashi* by the third generation Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, who forged blades near the Ikutama Jinja, a shrine of prestigious authority equal to the Ise Jingu in the Tennoji district of Osaka. The first generation Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi was the second son of the first generation Kyo Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi; born in the 3rd year of Keicho (1598) (427 years ago), he received the title of Tanba no Kami during the Shoho era and moved to Osaka. This *wakizashi* is by the third generation Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, the grandson of the founder of the Osaka Tanba lineage. The period is the Genroku era (1688) (337 years ago), a time when the splendid and flamboyant culture of the Edo period blossomed during the reign of the fifth Shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. This *wakizashi* presents a grand *hira-zukuri* shape with a wide *moto-mihaba* and *saki-mihaba* with a distinct *sori*. The *jigane* is forged in *ko-itame hada*, revealing a bright steel. The *hamon* begins with a *suguba-style yakidashi* in *nioi-deki* with *ko-nie*, leading into the family’s traditional *sudare-ba*. Furthermore, it features an ingenious and masterfully fired *hamon* with *tama* (jewels) representing the sun on both sides near the *kissaki*, brilliantly showcasing the extraordinary talent of the third generation Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi. He was a master smith who maintained the prosperity of Osaka Shinto following the peak era of Tsuda Echizen no Kami Sukehiro and Inoue Shinkai. The *koshirae* is also wonderful; a luxurious Edo-period mounting adorned with expensive matching *kiri-karakusa* (paulownia vine) *kin-zogan* (gold inlay) fittings, adding further splendor to this *wakizashi*. We received this from an old connoisseur who requested that we pass this on to the next generation at an affordable price. While anyone can identify the *sudare-ba* of Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi upon appraisal, this particular *wakizashi* features a unique *hamon* with sun-like *tama* that is rarely seen even among his works. Therefore, we are offering it at a special bargain price. Please enjoy this *wakizashi* by the third generation Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, featuring the *sudare-ba* that everyone wishes to own at least once.
