It has arrived, it has arrived—an auspicious Jumyo wakizashi housed in a wonderfully luxurious Court Dress saber koshirae with a provenance to the Matsuura Clan of the Hirado Domain, featuring fittings painstakingly engraved by Meiji era kinko-shi. This work is a saber for Court Dress passed down from the Count Matsuura family, famous for Hirado Castle in Nagasaki Prefecture. During the Rokumeikan era of the Meiji period, when entertaining foreign dignitaries, luxurious Court Dress was worn to show that Japan’s spirit would not be outdone by European nations; this is the sword worn alongside those resplendent military-style Court uniforms. The smith of the wakizashi inside, Jumyo of Mino, was a swordsmith of the Yamato lineage who migrated to Mino starting around the Shoo era of the Kamakura period (1288, 738 years ago). Since ancient times, there is perhaps no sword as famous in the sword world as Jumyo. As a lucky charm celebrating the wish for a long life (Jumyo), these swords were greatly cherished and frequently used as gifts among the Daimyo. This wakizashi is a work from around the Tenbun era of the Muromachi period (1543, 483 years ago), exactly when firearms were introduced to Tanegashima from Portugal. The sugata of this wakizashi has been shortened by about 2 sun, displaying a fine wakizashi form with a distinct difference between the moto-mihaba and saki-mihaba. The jigane is itame-hada mixed with mokume-hada, manifesting masame-hada with ji-nie and chikei. The hamon is a nioi-deki with nie-attached gunome-midare, manifesting many kinsuji and niesuji, with a bright and spirited ha. The Court Dress saber koshirae, featuring the Matsuura family mon (maru-ni-nibiki) and luxurious fittings where a Meiji kinko-shi used a tagane to strike nanako and engrave cherry blossom trees, adds a further layer of splendor to this auspicious Jumyo wakizashi. We have received this Court Dress saber from an old family who has cherished it for generations; as they have grown old, they asked us to pass it on to someone who will treasure it. Therefore, we are offering it at a special bargain price. Please enjoy it.
