Description

Goto Yujo is the first generation head of the main Goto family. Born in the 12th year of Eikyo (1440) during the Muromachi period (584 years ago), he served as a close aide to the 6th Ashikaga Shogun, Yoshimasa, who founded the Ginkaku-ji temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama. Because Goto Yujo possessed exceptional talent in metal carving, he received an order from Ashikaga Yoshimasa to carve sword fittings; he took the name Yujo and was conferred the rank of Hokkyo. He was granted a stipend of 200 kan in Sakamoto, Omi, by Ashikaga Yoshimasa. Goto Yujo completely transformed the design of sword fittings, inventing takabori uttori iroe (fukuro-pise iroe) and completing the highly prestigious Goto style, establishing himself as a master craftsman of the early modern era. From him down to Mitsunori, the 17th generation, the Goto family was treated with great favor by the rulers of the time and flourished as the main pillar of the Japanese metalworking world. It was the first generation author, Yujo, who laid that foundation. Mitsutaka is the 13th generation. Yujo passed away on May 7th in the 9th year of Eisho at the age of 73; the reason the dates on Goto family origami are set to the 7th is because Yujo's death anniversary falls on the 7th. This kozuka is a wonderful and precious work by the first generation Goto Yujo. Please enjoy it.
