NihontoWatchNihontoWatch暁から朝へ、薄暮から夜へ。空や空気にはっきりとした境界線はないが、意匠化したらこんな風になるのだろうか。室町時代から桃山時代に流行した片身替りの着物を見るような、金と赤銅魚子地の大胆な削継仕立。金地には平象嵌、赤銅魚子地には四分一地の高彫象嵌で水辺に向かって降下してゆく雁が描かれている。鳴き交わし、身を反転させ、着水に備える雁たち。平象嵌の雁は輪郭線が一段明るい金色で、恰も発光しているかのようだ。平安時代、渡り鳥の雁は、永遠不変の理想郷、常世国からの使者と考えられ、尊ばれてきた。だとすればこの金と漆黒の片身替りは常世と現世を表しているのだろうか。細工所を開設し、職人に禄を払い、藩を上げて工芸を奨励した加賀藩。金工においては京都から後藤家の覚乗、程乗、顕乗らを招き指導を仰いだ。豪壮華麗な桃山の気風を伝える加賀金工の作品は、確かな技術に裏打ちされた、骨のある華やかさを纏っている。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
