The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This is a modern katana by Fujiwara Motohisa, famously used by Nakayama Taisaburou Sensei of the Toyama school. It features a wide body and thin kasane, making it well-balanced and suitable for Iai-do and Shizan-do. The koshirae is in good condition with a newly re-wrapped tsuka, and the blade itself is generally well-preserved despite some minor scuffs from use.
