This is a tanto by Goto Kanenari, born in 1926 in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. He was a student of Watanabe Kanehisa and is designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture. This particular work is a reproduction of the national treasure, the famous Hōchō Masamune.

Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
