This is a sukashi tsuba featuring a phoenix design, signed by Kawaji of Choshu. The phoenix is a mythical bird from ancient Chinese legend, said to appear only when a virtuous ruler governs. This piece is an excellent example of Choshu tsuba, known for its intricate and elegant craftsmanship, with gold accents on the hitsu-ana.
