Hosono Masamori was a metalworker who expressed landscapes of the Kyoto suburbs and the Omi area in a panoramic style using the technique of kebori hira-zogan on a rogin base. These fuchi-kashira make full use of takabori techniques on a shakudo nanako base, combining various scenes of the Omi Hakkei to masterfully carve and depict a sense of depth and three-dimensionality clearly within a space of less than one sun. The drifting clouds and the ripples of Lake Biwa, rendered with minute nanako, not only call to mind a folding screen painting but also impart a natural movement to the composition.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
