Description

This is a signed katana by Minamoto Yoshimune from the late Edo period. The blade is 70.9 cm long with a 1.4 cm curvature and a suguha hamon. The koshirae is complete and well-preserved, featuring a black lacquered saya and silver menuki shaped like stylized ocean waves.

Historical context

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
