The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This katana by Zuiho, active in the early Showa period, features a slightly shorter nagasa and shallow sori, characteristic of a practical combat sword. The blade has a thick kasane, an itame hada jigane, and a straight-based gunome hamon with ashi and tobiyaki. It comes with a koshirae featuring horn kashira, antique fuchi, an octagonal tsuba with Amida yasuri and small openwork, and an akebono ro-saya.
