Meibun: "Daiei Shichinen Nigatsu Hi Yukimitsu" Type: Katana Nagasa: 2 shaku 3 sun 8 bu Sori: 4 bu Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education Showa 26 Daimyo Registration Motohaba: 30 mm Motokasane: 7 mm Sakihaba: 19 mm Sakikasane: 5 mm Toshin weight: 721 grams (approximate) With NBTHK Kanteisho Kashu Yukimitsu, alongside Kiyomitsu, is one of the representative tosho of the Kaga Koto period dating back to the Nanbokucho era. This work features a well-packed itame resembling tree rings, with kinsuji emphasized within the ha, intertwining with hotsure to create a tremendous hataraki. Complete with a nenkisaku tachi-zukuri, it is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The registration certificate (toroku-sho) states "Nigatsu Hi" (February), but the kanteisho and the actual object state "Sangatsu Hi" (March). Upon properly notifying the Board of Education, it appears the registration official at the time recorded it incorrectly. Please rest assured as images of the actual item, the toroku-sho, and the ninteisho have all been provided as reference materials to the Board of Education. When performing the ownership change (meigi henko), please fill it out according to the toroku-sho for the time being. The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
