This is an expressive Japanese oni mask dating to the late Edo period, 19th century, carved from wood and finished in richly aged lacquer. It features prominent horns, gilt-ringed eyes, a broad grin, and blackened teeth, presenting the oni as a mischievous and almost comic supernatural character. The mask was constructed as a functional theatrical or ritual mask, with pierced eyes and open nostrils for vision and ventilation.
