After the Ōnin War broke the Ashikaga order, a century of Sengoku warfare armed nearly every province in Japan. The era rewards a discriminating eye: routine work exists in quantity, and beside it stand custom blades of the first rank.
This is an unsigned wakizashi from the late Muromachi period, around the Genki era (1570-1573). It features a high shinogi and saki-zori, with an itame flowing into masame jigane. The hamon is a nie-deki komidare, and the boshi is slightly extended and pointed with a subtle turn-back. It comes with a koshirae featuring period fittings, a leather-wrapped tsuka, and a black roiro saya with a square openwork tsuba.
