This is a tanto by Kuribara Nobuhide, dated Bunkyu 1 (1861), made when he was 47 years old. It features exquisite carvings of Daikoku-ten on the omote and Ebisu 'Rusu' motif on the ura, though the horimono was carved by someone other than Nobuhide himself. The blade comes with a gold-foiled double habaki, shirasaya, and a matching aikuchi koshirae with a black ishime-ji nuri saya.

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
