Description

This is a superb yoroidōshi tanto by Kunisada of Aizu, active during the Kanbun era of the early Edo period. It features an exceptionally thick blade (7.7mm kasane) with bō-hi on both faces, crafted with a packed itame mixed with mokume jigane and a bright hoso-suguha hamon. The tanto comes in an elaborate kizami-saya period koshirae with a full ray-skin hilt and a tengu fuchi-kashira, embodying the martial spirit and aesthetic of the Aizu samurai.

Historical context

For two and a half centuries of peace the sword was the warrior’s legal badge rather than his weapon. Each great city developed its own manner, Edo’s tested strength against Ōsaka’s polished brilliance, until demand thinned in the era’s last decades.
