Description

This is an unsigned tanto from the middle to late Edo period, likely forged as a Chigo-gatana (child's sword). While the jigane and hamon are currently unclear due to rust, a strong yakiba is present, and no significant flaws are noted, suggesting it will be a beautiful piece after polishing. It comes with a suaka habaki and a black roiro saya, and is recommended as a protective charm for a child.

Historical context

The Edo period (1615 to 1868)

›

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
