This katana was signed by Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Arihira, an active smith during the early Edo period (1624-1661) in Kaga province. He was the second son of the first-gen Kanewaka and served the Maeda clan. The blade comes with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate, koshirae mounting, and a shirasaya case.

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
