This is a russet iron fierce face menpo (face mask) from the Edo period, featuring a prominently protruding nose and a rich black bear fur mustache. The nose is detachable. It has a strongly undulating cheek and a protruding chin. The tare (throat guard) consists of four sections of iron plates lacquered in black, laced with light blue (asagi) silk in sugake-odoshi style. The inside of the mask is lacquered in vermilion.
