This is a remarkable fuchi-kashira by Shôunsai (Tani Motosada), an accomplished metalsmith of the early Edo period. Crafted from polished shibuichi, it depicts the three sworn brothers of the “Records of the Three Kingdoms”: Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. The carving is exceptionally fine, with individually characterized faces and deeply rendered armor and robes.
