The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This is a modern katana made by Fujiwara Kanefusa, the 23rd generation of the Kanefusa line, who was an appointed swordsmith for the Imperial Japanese Army. The blade measures 76.2cm in length and features a gunome midare hamon. The koshirae is crafted using antique fittings from the Edo period and is in excellent condition, and a shirasaya is also included.
