After the Ōnin War broke the Ashikaga order, a century of Sengoku warfare armed nearly every province in Japan. The era rewards a discriminating eye: routine work exists in quantity, and beside it stand custom blades of the first rank.
This is a tantō by Nara Tarō Kanesho, a swordsmith from Mino Seki during the Tenbun era of the Muromachi period. The blade features a hira-zukuri, iori-mune form with a normal width and slightly thin kasane, and a very slight curvature. It comes with a late Edo period aikuchi-style koshirae, though it is regrettable that the kōgai is missing.
