The Haitōrei edict of 1876 ended sword wearing and nearly ended the craft itself. Military demand and imperial patronage kept a remnant alive, and in 1906 Gassan Sadakazu and Miyamoto Kanenori were named Artists to the Imperial Household.
This is a wakizashi made by Kunihisa in the late Edo period. The blade has a wide body and thick kasane, making it suitable for appreciation or iai practice with a koshirae. It comes with a shirasaya and has some minor scratches from test cutting, but the blade is otherwise in excellent condition.
