It has arrived, it has arrived—a famous meiwakizashi by the renowned master swordsmith Gassan Sadayoshi, replicating the work of the Oei Bizen master smith Bizen no Kuni Osafune-ju Morimitsu. The original Gassan Sadayoshi, who built the foundation of the famous Osaka Gassan smiths, was a descendant of the Oshū Gassan line. Around the first year of the Bunsei era (circa 1818, 208 years ago), he went to Edo and became a monjin of the master Suishinshi Masahide, who is hailed as the founder of the Shinshinto period. In the fourth year of Tenpo (1833, 193 years ago), he moved to Osaka. He is the master craftsman who established the foundation for the prosperity of six generations of Osaka Gassan smiths continuing to the present day: Sadayoshi, Sadakazu, Sadakatsu, Sadakazu, Sadatoshi, and Sadanobu. This wakizashi is a precious piece dated to the fifth year of Ansei (1858, 168 years ago) during the Bakumatsu period, replicating the famous Bizen no Kuni Osafune-ju Morimitsu. This was the time when the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan was signed—a treaty that pro-imperial shishi sought to abolish in their movement to overthrow the Shogunate. It was the year before the famous Ansei Purge began, in which the Lord of the Hikone Domain, Ii Naosuke, suppressed the anti-Shogunate forces. This work by Gassan Sadayoshi is filled with incredible spirit and intensity. The sugata of this wakizashi is hira-zukuri with a wide moto-mihaba and a distinct difference in width at the saki, beautifully expressing the fine wakizashi form of Oei Bizen. The jigane is forged in ko-itame hada, with a faint Bizen-style utsuri appearing near the moto, adding great character. The horimono consists of skillfully carved bo-hi. The hamon is composed of nioi-deki with ko-nie, featuring a bright and clear nioiguchi with gunome-ba, masterfully recreating the style of the Oei Bizen master Bizen no Kuni Osafune-ju Morimitsu. On this occasion, an elderly connoisseur has entrusted us with this piece, saying, "I have grown old, so please pass this on to the next generation at an affordable price." The Showa 26 Daimyo registration (Daimyo Toroku) is also highly valuable. We are offering this at a special, exceptionally low price. Please enjoy this meiwakizashi by the master smith and founder of the Osaka Gassan line, the first generation Gassan Sadayoshi, replicating the Oei Bizen master Osafune-ju Morimitsu.
