This is a katana made by Michitoshi, who was active in Musashi Province during the late Edo period (Kaei 4, 1851). He was known as Takezo and studied under Doga, a pupil of Aizu Dotatsu. Michitoshi was a samurai of the Mutsu Morioka domain and also researched new materials for sword making, with some works bearing the inscription 'Carbon Iron'.
