This Edo period kozuka features a finely textured nanako-ji ground with delicate gold inlay. The design depicts a scene of funagaku, a refined form of court entertainment with music and dance performed on boats. These boats were often adorned with decorative prows shaped like mythical creatures, such as dragons or geki.
