This is a tanto by Teruyoshi, also known as Fujieda Taro Teruyoshi, from Musashi province during the Shin-Shinto period (late Edo era, around Genji 1864-1865). It features a rare hadamono (Soshu-den like) grain, unusual for Teruyoshi's work, and comes with a brown lacquered aikuchi koshirae and shirasaya. The blade is certified Hozon Token by the NBTHK.

Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
