The tsuba is signed "Sendai-ju Sugiyama Tsuka-maru saku". The menuki on the sashi-omote is made of shibuichi and engraved with the Taga-jo Monument. (The Taga-jo Monument was created in the Nara period. It stands at the entrance of Taga-jo, where the provincial capital of Mutsu Province was located, and records the founding of Taga-jo in 724 and its subsequent renovation. It later became lost, but was rediscovered during the Edo period and protected by the Sendai Domain; it is currently designated as a National Important Cultural Property.) Matsuo Basho visited it in the second year of Genroku. The fuchi is made of wood carved with wisteria flowers, and the fuchi-kane is made of shakudo with "Saito" inlaid. The kozuka is a dai-kozuka made of tagayasan wood with Kinkasan depicted in gold makie. On the sashi-ura menuki, there is a design of a horse (koma) made of ancient wood.
