Description

This wakizashi by Nagashige, active in Sendai during the Kanbun era (early Edo period), is a superb example of his work. The blade features a wide body, deep sori, and a robust shinogi, characteristic of Kanbun Shinto. The jihada is a tightly packed masame with flowing ji-kei and fine ji-nie, creating a powerful yet clean appearance reminiscent of Yamato Hosho. The hamon is a shallow notare mixed with gunome, bright with ko-nie, and exhibits intricate patterns of yu-bashiri, kinsen, and sunagashi, with a bright nie-deki in the ha-chu. The koshirae is a stylish black ishime-ji nuri saya with cherry blossom makie, adorned with exquisite Sendai kinko fittings featuring detailed hirazogan work, including charming pigeon menuki and kozuka, and a fuchi-kashira depicting spring plants and birds in flight.

Historical context

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.

A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.

About the NBTHK›

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo.
