Description

Weight (excluding saya): 1127g It has arrived—Sesshu Ju Fujiwara Nagatsuna has been extremely famous since ancient times as a meito that cuts exceptionally well. He was a pupil of the grand master of Osaka Shinto, the first generation Omi no Kami Tadatsuna, and was a fellow student/brother-disciple to Ikkanshi Tadatsuna. His real name was Kitamura Ichiemon. Because there are swords where he inscribed "聾" (Deaf) Nagatsuna into the mei himself, he has been widely known through the ages as "Tsunbo Nagatsuna" for his sharp-cutting blades. However, very few of his works remain today, making them rare to encounter; this sword is a wonderful and precious piece even as historical reference material for Nagatsuna. The character for "Tsuna" (綱) is exactly the same as the one used by Ikkanshi Tadatsuna. This sword was originally a 2 shaku 3 sun katana, but a samurai of later generations, desperate to make it his own sashiryo, shortened it to match his own swordsmanship style. The sugata features a wide motohaba with a distinct difference at the sakihaba and shallow sori, exhibiting the same sharp sugata as a Kotetsu. The jigane is powerfully forged in itame hada. The horimono consists of gomabashi on the omote and a koshibi with marudome on the ura, executed with great skill. The hamon is Nagatsuna’s characteristic ashinaga choji-ba, tempered into a blade that looks as though it would cut remarkably well. The Edo-period koshirae is simple but features tetsu fittings, adding a further layer of elegance to the blade. This sword has been cherished for generations in an old family, but as they have grown old, we have been entrusted with it under the request to "pass it on at a low price to someone who will treasure it." For those who wish to own a masterpiece by the representative Osaka Shinto smith, Tsunbo Nagatsuna, we are offering this at a special bargain price as there is some rust from age as seen in the photos. Please enjoy this precious meito by the legendary Tsunbo Nagatsuna.
