The Hayashi school, founded by Hayashi Matashichi, is the senior of the four great Higo lines. Its tsuba are iron, distinguished by elegant sukashi and the refined gold nunome-zogan (textile-pattern overlay) for which Higo is celebrated. Hayashi guards exemplify the understated sophistication that places Higo work among the most admired of all tosogu.
